• Review:: '[McConnell]Create?'s high level approach to Project Management remains valuable even today. Be sure to read [McConnell]Create?'s recent texts. The Software Project Survival Guide [Steve [McConnell]Create?] remains applicable today as when first published in 1995. [McConnell]Create? has a clear knack for combining research, experience, and theory. His writing style is clear, concise, and easy to understand (introduction level programmer through to management). [McConnell]Create? approaches the topic of project management (design through to delivery) from an abstract (high) level; he outlines the best practices, provides comprehensive checklists, but leaves the implementation details to other authors. [McConnell]Create? States, "Whereas this book provides a big picture technical framework for a project, [Fergus] O'Connell's book focuses on the many specific activities a project manager must perform." (Part IV) [McConnell]Create? emphasizes successful management techniques, and always encourages personal development through his extensive use of references. Selected quotes: "Software development is inherently an exercise in climbing steep learning curves - an exercise in problem solving - and the learning curves don't disappear" (Chapter 17) "No individual is a success who hurts the team, and no individual is a failure who helps it." The author is not trying to sell any specific process or methedology, instead the book is full of down-to-earth practical advice about software development. • Review:: 'Open your managers eyes. I bought this book because I wanted to open my managers eyes. You see, I work for a brand new software development company. I work under managers with no coding experience, so their methodology is "code now, fix later. Plan... well, don't plan". The lead developer and myself were about to go insane, and then we found this little gem. This book is an eye-opener, especially for managers, project leads and others involved in the software development process (even developers). This book provides proven concepts backed with solid information. This book provides check-lists so you can see where your project is heading, also there are tons of graphs that will illustrate important concepts visually. I casually passed this book along to my managers and the next thing I know big changes were happening... for the better. We are now able to make plans before developing, and now the tension at my work has gone down quite a bit. We are now planning for changes instead of waiting for them. If you are in my shoes and are in need of a primer to prove to your managers that your project is heading in the wrong direction then I would pick this book up right now. This book provides factual information about how the software development process should work (and how it can break if not planned correctly) Steve [McConnell]Create? is an icon in the software industry, listen to him.
• Review:: 'Excellent Intro/Refresh for PMs I will not dive into what is either good or bad about this book.

  The reason I am giving 5 stars is because the book actually achieves its goal to those who read it.

  The reader who gave two stars has actually missed the point of the book. It is not about planning. It is about planning _and_ managing. Successful execution of the right plan is the main point of the book.

  Trivial things, you say? Yes, most of the concepts in the book are trivial (yet, very useful when organized nicely and in ready-to-use manner) Nevertheless, again and again I see projects that fail because of the wrong management. In fact, I would dare to say that all projects that failed in front of my eyes (and there were enough failed projects in my life) are due to mostly management issues: lack of vision, disconnection from team, "planned" overtime, unrealistic schedules due to pressure from upper management etc.

  Inability to recognize management problem quickly leads to catastrophic results for mid-size companies and this books may prevent this for those who care.

• Review:: 'AVOID AT ALL COSTS I'm studying to be a Social Worker, and this software would have made typing papers easier... had it worked. I downloaded the software to see how it worked, and not only was the demo not fully functional, but was also no uninstallable, either with the Control Panel or with System Suite. I had to delete the folder that was created when I installed the program.
• Review:: 'APA Help wasn't much help Not only is the software not very user friendly, including a help system that was not designed to answer the users questions, but the software crashed my computer.
• Review:: 'Apa 5.0 This item does not work and when you download may cause a bug. The company is aware and will automatically upgrade you to 5.1. My computer will not take the down load and im stuck with this CD that has messed up my computer.
• Review:: 'Demo scared me off I downloaded the demo, which was clunky at best. It hung when I tried to register for the full version. Several of the features were unavailable without the full, so I looked around to see where it was available. Then I read the reviews here. Now I know I should not buy this product.
• Review:: 'This software broke my computer, and also just sucks Installing this program absolutely fried my registry. I have no idea what happened to it. As with another review here, I am far from a computer novice. But the .NET installation, which seems to be completely unnecessary, caused a lot of problems, not the least of which involved crashing my nice Trend-Micro Antivirus software. The interface of the program makes absolutely no sense. It's completely counterintuitive. There's a serious of tabbed options for entering references that take about 5 minutes for every source you use. There's no compatibility with Endnote, and, as far as I could tell, also none with Word. My favorite part happened when I gave up and tried to close the program and turn off my computer. It wouldn't let me turn off the computer because the program was still running, the program wouldn't stop running because it insisted I had a document open, and it wouldn't close the document because that brought up an error message. Do yourself a favor. Do not, under any circumstances, purchase this product. If you already have, do not install it. Best case scenario, you waste 10 minutes of your life realizing that the program's no help. Seriously. This is probably the biggest POS I've ever come across.
