The Mercy of Thin Air is a poignant and intelligent first novel that beautifully captures the nature of love and how it transcends all barriers--even death."

• Review:: 'intriguing novel I thoroughly enjoyed this novel, which was selected by my book club. It was challenging to keep track of the timeline, but I found it to be a great escape novel.
• Review:: 'Thin air but a thinner plot Razi dies of a neck injury after a swimming accident and remains "in between," where she tries to follow the rule of not spending time around loved ones. When a young couple, Scott and Amy, buys her widowed boyfriend Andrew's bookcase, years after her death, she follows them home and stays. We later learn that Amy is the granddaughter of one of Razi's good friends and, through that relationship, she learns some facts about his life without her. Razi, who, in the 1920's was ahead of her time in wanting to be a gynecologist and supporting pro-birth control and pro-choice causes, struggled over whether to choose a career over a relationship with and marriage to Andrew. Although she chose Andrew, because she did so in a letter, un-sent due to her untimely death, he does not know. At times, Razi's "in between" abilities allow her to affect the life of the couple in small ways, helping them to get through some of their marital issues. Skip this one in favor of The Lovely Bones, similar, but better.
• Review:: 'Thin on Characterization (what I liked) From the start I was intrigued by the concept - a young woman dies in a pool accident and dwells in the "life between", mischievously meddling in the lives of people she "haunts". I liked the flow of Domingue's writing, as well as the short cameo-like chapters, jumping from past to present. The story is told with sincerity and heart. But. (what I disliked) The characters are "too nice" to be believable and their relationships too romanticized. Razi and Andrew are the perfect couple with the perfect relationship, devoid of any conflict. Their love for each other is all-consuming, unwavering, sometimes bordering on the cheap and sentimental - "I cannot doubt the rush under my skin when you turn those unfathomable blue eyes my way, the velocity of my blood... the ebb and flow of my breath when you whisper my name". It seems, at times, we've wandered into schmaltzy romance territory. Even the characters' relationships with their friends and family are so conflict-free and wholesome, you start to yearn for some disputes, some tension, some real life drama! Furthermore, Razi's reminiscent accounts lack believability. When she narrates her childhood experiences, she tells the stories with such maturity and depth of perception that far exceed the storytelling abilities of a child - she writes with an author's voice, not a child's. Even her teenage experiences (her first kiss, her first sexual experiences) are told without any indication of insecurity, anxiety or angst. Razi is just ever-appreciative, ever-content. Lastly, there is hardly any difference in the way the characters talk and behave in the 1920s compared to the present. The humor and dialogue is interchangeable. You wish the author had thrown in some flapper slang and humour to add more authenticity. Overall it was an easy read, at times endearing, yet lacking in believable characters.
• Review:: 'Very good... This is the second book I've read recently that has been compared to THE LOVELY BONES, the other being THE BRIGHT FOREVER by Lee Martin. This book, along with THE BRIGHT FOREVER, are far better books than THE LOVELY BONES, a book I truly did not like and thought was way over-hyped. THE MERCY OF THIN AIR is a good book and an enjoyable read, although it does have some problems. The connection between Razi and Amy, though interesting, was a bit to convoluted for me to completely buy into. I found I did not care for Amy, as I saw her as a bit of a user, conveniently substituting Scott for Jem. I also found several obvious punctuation errors. I did find the attitudes about birth control in the 1920's quite informative. It definitely makes you think about how times have changed. All in the entire story did flow very well and was a nice enough read. If you enjoyed this book, I highly recommend THE BRIGHT FOREVER.
• Review:: 'Spellbinding The Mercy of Thin Air is a book that is heart-breaking throughout, telling a story of love discovered, rejoiced in, and then brutally lost. And then taking the story one step further, detailing just how much grief can affect a person, and how people must then make the very real and very difficult decision of moving on or holding on. The Mercy of Thin Air is an ethereal novel that will leave you haunted with the ache of might-have-beens. And you will linger over the pages- like a lost soul- and reread the same, perfectly worded passages over and over. This is a book that is well worth curling up on a sofa with and savoring. Highly, highly recommended.
