The First 90 Days- Critical Success Strategies for New Leaders at All Levels

Critical Success Strategies for New Leaders at All Levels:
Book by Michael Watkins. Harvard Business School Press 208 pages Hardcover Published 2003-09-18. Description: Whether challenged with taking on a startup, turning a business around, or inheriting a high-performing unit, a new leader's success or failure is determined within the first 90 days on the job. In this hands-on guide, Michael Watkins, a noted expert on leadership transitions, offers proven strategies for moving successfully into a new role at any point in one's career. The First 90 Days provides a framework for transition acceleration that will help leaders diagnose their situations, craft winning transition strategies, and take charge quickly. Practical examples illustrate how to learn about new organizations, build teams, create coalitions, secure early wins, and lay the foundation for longer-term success. In addition, Watkins provides strategies for avoiding the most common pitfalls new leaders encounter, and shows how individuals can protect themselves-emotionally as well as professionally-during what is often an intense and vulnerable period. Concise and actionable, this is the survival guide no new leader should be without. "Few companies develop a systematic 'on-boarding' process for their new leaders, even though this is a critical function with major organizational implications. Michael Watkins's The First 90 Days provides a powerful framework and strategies that will enable new leaders to take charge quickly. It is an invaluable tool for that most vulnerable time-the transition." -Goli Darabi, Senior Vice President, Corporate Leadership then read it again after you've settled in, and consider how to accelerate transitions for your next new boss and for those who come to work for you." -Colonel Eli Alford, U.S. Army "Watkins provides an excellent road map, telling us what all new leaders need to know and do to accelerate their learning and success in a new role. The First 90 Days should be incorporated into every company's leadership development strategy, so that anyone making a transition in an organization can get up to speed quicker and smarter." -Suzanne M. Danielle, Director of Global Leadership Development, Aventis "Michael Watkins has nailed a huge corporate problem and provided the solution in one fell swoop. The pressure on new leaders to hit the ground running has never been greater, and the likelihood and cost of failure is escalating. Watkins's timing with The First 90 Days is impeccable." -Gordon Curtis, Principal, Curtis Consulting " The First 90 Days is a must-read for entrepreneurs. Anyone who's been the CEO of a start-up or early-stage company knows that you go through many 90-day leadership transitions in the course of a company's formative years. In this groundbreaking book, Michael Watkins provides crucial insights, as well as a toolkit of techniques, to enable you to accelerate through these transitions successfully." -Mike Kinkead, President and CEO, timeBLASTER Corporation, serial entrepreneur, and Cofounder and Trustee, Massachusetts Software Council
      • Review:: 'The First 90 Days: Critical Success Strategies for New Leaders ( Your Coach in a Box) The book is splendid and is essential for any new manager. It will also enhance the managerial and leadership life of any progressive manager regardless of experience. I would promote this book and/or the CD set to any organisation that really wants organisational development to be enhanced.
      • Review:: 'Solid, Well-Written Guidance For Getting Off on the Right Foot Watkins' success with this book is in my view based on the simplicity, clarity, and sensible structure of his model. The model and supporting tools and concepts may or may not be grounded in behavioral science or perhaps even in extensive research that would pass muster with the sternest of psychometricians, but no matter - they'll work if you apply them with rigor and flexibility. That's the thing about leadership books and leadership itself, isn't it? If you can wade through the many paradoxes presented by the rigorous yet flexible application of common sense, you'll probably come out on top. Watkins' work here is awfully strong. This book is highly readable, easily digestible, and provides simple, easy mental models for new leaders to latch on to. I recommend this book strongly to all the newly-promoted and newly-hired managers I encounter, just as it was recommended to me. That's probably the best endorsement possible.
      • Review:: 'Guidance for those in transition Michael Watkins offers counsel that is relevant to so many, yet is actually a subject of study for so few. In my lifetime I have changed companies no less than four times. Job titles have changed twice than many times. Preparing for and performing well during times of change accounts for a large part of my career. And I think I am not alone. For those looking for nuggets of assitance in their own transition, this book is for you. But Watkins research is new and still evolving to maturity. Look for more and better things to come from him in the future. Best about book: exercises and tests give chance for reflection and application to current environment, e.g. the personal problem preference test.
      • Review:: 'Taking charge The book provides excellent advices and brilliant resources. It's very useful and handy for everybody who wants to be succeeded in a business world. It's well-organized book, easy to read.
      • Review:: 'Very good book This book contains important insights for the new leader. I implemented two of the author's suggestions with great success. Easy to read, and practical.

The New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain

Book by Betty Edwards. Tarcher 320 pages Paperback Published 1999-08-30. Description: illustrated with 12-page color photo insert and line art throughout

A revised and expanded edition of the classic drawing-instruction book that has sold more than 2,500,000 copies.

When Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain was first published in 1979, it hit the New York Times bestseller list within two weeks and stayed there for more than a year. In 1989, when Dr. Betty Edwards revised the book, it went straight to the Times list again. Now Dr. Edwards celebrates the twentieth anniversary of her classic book with a second revised edition.

Over the last decade, Dr. Edwards has refined her material through teaching hundreds of workshops and seminars. Truly The New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, this edition includes:

* the very latest developments in brain research;
* new material on using drawing techniques in the corporate world and in education;
* instruction on self-expression through drawing;
* an updated section on using color; and
* detailed information on using the five basic skills of drawing for problem solving.

Translated into thirteen languages, Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain is the world's most widely used drawing-instruction guide. People from just about every walk of life--artists, students, corporate executives, architects, real estate agents, designers, engineers--have applied its revolutionary approach to problem solving. The Los Angeles Times said it best: Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain is "not only a book about drawing, it is a book about living. This brilliant approach to the teaching of drawing . . . should not be dismissed as a mere text. It emancipates."
      • Review:: ' a great read this book has alot of needless right brain/left brain info that to me is just there for page filling and with that said... this is pound for pound the best book on learning to SEE really well and really fast. I have many drawing books and this one really helped me alot as far as seeing goes after I finshed the book and all its exercises I was doing like like portrates for the first time in my life great book GET IT
      • Review:: 'Drawing Made Sensible This book is not intended to teach you to be an "artist" whose works get sold in galleries. It is meant to awaken the part of you that actually can draw, even if you think you can't, and to help you find the joy in drawing what you see. The negative reviews below are clearly from people who consider themselves to be "real artists", which apparently they define as "someone who has attended art school and now attempts to make a living at it." Sounds pretty condescending to me.
      • Review:: 'Great Drawing Instruction The book is a terrific step-by-step instruction on drawing. The exercises were very useful and built confidence. The book shows that drawing is a skill that can be learned with the proper instruction. The book was easy to read and understand. You should purchase the workbook, VCR tape and other materials to maximize the benefits of the program. I liked the book so much that I bought another book by the same author.
      • Review:: 'THIS BOOK IS MISINFORMATIVE TO REAL BEGGINERS... Way back in 8th. grade, I read Edward's drawing on the right side of the brain because I was clueless on drawing, and you know what? I could suddenly draw pretty well!...wait a minute, let me backtrack a little. You've read everyone's review explaining what this book is about, so I'll clarify the facts. This book is an instructional on how you can approach an image to be drawn by "seeing" it as being made up as smaller abstract shapes in relation to other abstract shapes which collectively will make up the whole (like in the upside down drawings). This is a trueism in drawing, especially in referenced realism, but this book fails to explain other more fundamental concepts that begginers SHOULD be studying, tangible concepts like using basic shapes and geometric forms to achieve solidity and to also achieve perspective in your drawings. It doesn't talk about simplifying complex images into a more pleasing composition, or about composition at all for that matter. It doesn't discuss anatomy. It never mentions light sources, or the importance of creating an accurate and practical value system to be used in your drawing. The information in this book basically taught me how to create almost photorealistic pencil drawings of photos of simple portraits, which seemed impressive, but I wasn't able to draw anything that required an actual working understanding of perspective, or make quick sketches (my "portraits" only worked if I spent a couple of days on a single detail, like an eye), and I could never ever draw un-referenced things like cartoons BECAUSE I DIDN'T REALLY KNOW HOW TO DRAW This book is no doubt interesting, but I'd skip it if you are an absolute begginer looking for qaulity instruction. Although most people who are interested in this title would probably balk at anything to do with cartooning, I would suggest checking out a book called Comics Crash Course by Vincent Giarrano. Everything I've mentioned in this review that is not included in DOROB is explain very well in this excellent IMPACT title.
      • Review:: 'Not For Everyone Thankfully, I got this out of the library instead of paying for it. I thought it would help me bring my drawings up another notch. I'm always looking for tips and techniques. This book will probably help you if you haven't drawn since childhood or have struggled with drawing anything in a realistic way. But, if you can already draw with some realism, you may want to skip this book. I have always naturally had the "brain shifts" during art without having to think about it or be aware of the process, and so her exercises seemed to confuse my brain somewhat. The book did put a name and description to what had always come naturally to me, but by making me think about the shift, it seemed to make something harder that shouldn't be. Sort of like if you were to read a book to teach you how to _____ (fill in the blank with anything that already comes naturally to you). To try to break it down and dissect it to death might confuse your mind some. Maybe your brain takes it the wrong way, as in, "Hey, I already do this - I'm insulted you would doubt my ability and now you've confused the heck out of me! Are you trying to tell me to do things differently after what I've done for you all these years?" LOL. Maybe something like that. Well, not to keep harping on that, it didn't cause any permanent damage, LOL. A good thing about the book - they do make it easy to see how we often draw something the way we think it's supposed to look - usually from the way we made it look when we were kids. The book emphasizes really SEEING it, and drawing what you see.
