These offer extended coverage for teachers or students who desire additional instruction. • Review:: 'Good book. I think this book is very good for a beginning music class. The CD would come in handy I think, but this version does not come with a CD. I have enjoyed using this book for the college music class I am in and recommend it for beginning and advanced music students.
      • Review:: 'The best basic theory text available Of all the basic theory texts out there, this is the only one that invites the student into a musical exploration of theory. Unlike other basic texts (Damschroder, Conley/Clough, Harder/Steinke), Duckworth's book connects theory with music through numerous musical games and activities. While it is designed for use in a college classroom--many of the activities require an instructor--it can be used for individual study by an advanced beginner. (Someone who has some experience playing an instrument or singing in choirs, for instance.)

I highly recommend this book--for beginners, or for teachers who, like myself, are always looking for a way to bring basic material to life. Duckworth does so marvelously.

      • Review:: 'A great book on *all* the basics I thought this was a terrific book when I had it in college! That was way back and it was the 4th ed., but I doubt it's changed much (I need to buy it myself). This book covers all the "basics" of music. Now, I'm a little biased because I learned the very true basics of music through several years of band as a kid (notes, scales, basic time, etc), but there are still very many things I never learned from those kid days that are contained herein. It is concise and complete, covering many topics and makes it easy to understand everything very quickly. I was devastated when the last WEEK of the semester I left the book somewhere - and when I tried to find it in the likely places that day, it was gone. Some other engineering student (I was taking this as an extra class) probably picked it up and realized what a great source it was. I liked it so much I went back to the school store during the next-semester sale to buy one - only to see the department had given it up for another book! Bummer!
      • Review:: 'Must have some background in music or it's gibberish Duckworth is not a very good writer of educational texts. I was able to follow it fairly well, but this was a textbook for an introductory class, and much of the material is poorly explained, with an assumption that the reader, whom he seems to intend to be a beginner, knows more than they probably do. I found this textbook to be needlessly challenging for the wrong reasons. It is fairly useful, but my professor even hated using this book for an introductory course (the department selected it for her). If you are in step with a lot of music fundamentals, it should help you advance much farther; however, if you are not,, this book will seriously confuse you.

The Knot Guide to Wedding Vows and Traditions- Readings, Rituals, Music, Dances, and Toasts

Cover of ISBN 0767902483The Knot Guide to Wedding Vows and Traditions
Readings, Rituals, Music, Dances, and Toasts:
Book by Carley Roney and The Knot. Broadway 224 pages Paperback Published 2000-12-26. Description: When planning for the big day, it's very easy to get caught up in beaded white dresses, boutonnieres, and how many platters of mini crab cakes to order, but the most important part of the wedding is the most-often overlooked--the ceremony itself. A wedding ceremony can vary hugely depending on the religious (or not) beliefs of the couple, their cultural backgrounds, and their personal preferences. The Knot Guide to Wedding Vows and Traditions can help you sort through all the choices and come up with just the right vows and music for you and your intended.

Do you want the traditional "I, so and so, take thee, so and so, to be my lawfully wedding husband/wife before God" or do you want a looser style: "I love you. And I look forward to being your friend and companion, your wife/husband and lover for life"? Carley Roney, author and editor-in-chief of The Knot (www.theknot.com), strongly suggests taking a stab at writing your own vows, but if that's just too much, cull what you like from the many different styles--from Buddhist to Quaker--offered. Readings can be from the Bible or other spiritual writings, from poetry or even song lyrics. A diverse selection of writings and excerpts are included as are a lengthy lists of songs and music for before the ceremony, the processional, the recessional, and the first dance (everything from Bach's "Brandenberg Concerto No. 4" to Martina [McBride]Create?'s "I Love You").

Also included here are chapters on the wedding program, ring exchanges, and speeches and toasts. Interspersed are stories and pictures of real couples and how they arranged their wedding day. Meant as a jolt to your imagination, The Knot Guide to Wedding Vows and Traditions helps you to put a very personal touch on an age-old ceremony. --Dana Van Nest Description: From the #1 wedding Web site and the author of The Knot Complete Guide To Weddings In The Real World, a comprehensive guide to choosing the perfect words and music for your wedding.

In her third book in The Knot series, Carley Roney has created a complete guide to wedding vows, toasts, and readings that is the perfect resource for wedding couples, bridesmaids, best men, and parents alike. Drawing on wedding traditions and customs from around the world, The Knot Complete Guide To Wedding Vows And Traditionsincludes real-world information on:

—Vows, from the traditional "to have and to hold" to creating your own
—Rituals from a variety of traditions–breaking the glass, cutting the cake–and their history and significance
—Toasts, from the classics to advice on writing your own, as well as toasting etiquette and tips on choosing your toastmaster
—Readings, spanning various customs and heritages, poetry and prose, plus sources for finding your own selections
—Music–complete lists of popular options to help you chose the perfect songs from the processional to the last dance

      • Review:: 'A must for religious weddings If you are planning a religious ceremony for your wedding, this book is a must for your collection. It was helpful when writing the ceremony program. Although we chose not to write our own vows, it helped me with ideas for what I wanted to say at the rehearsal dinner. It includes ideas for all different religions and how each ceremony usually takes place. It gives ideas on how to include personal touches for your wedding. I found this book very helpful and am happy to pass it on to my newly engaged cousin.
      • Review:: 'Not Helpful for Us This book is full of information, but none of it hit home for us. We came away with only one idea that we are actually going to use and found many of the sayings and toasts to be very cheesy.
      • Review:: 'Helpful I'm not the kind of person who has planned her wedding since she was six years old. My family is not religious, we do not have our own traditions, and I really had no idea what I wanted to do for my ceremony. I liked this book because it provided a lot of options. It showed vows for a handful of different religious, from the traditional Protestant vows, to ethical humanists, to Buddhists. I especially liked that it had a wide selection of readings that were not from the Bible, including some really beautiful Native American prayers, and some of Shakespeare's sonnets. Selections for music were good as well, although not quite as helpful to me since they are so many good lists available for free online. There were some places I wish the book was a little more descriptive, though. For example, the description of how the Unity candle is used within the ceremony could not have been more vague. I would have liked more information on how things like this are actually staged. Still, a very useful starting point.
      • Review:: 'WEDDING GIFT I bought this for my daughter, but ended up wanting to read it first. Well organized and useful tips. There were alot of helpful suggestions and sometimes you just need the thought and then you can run with an idea. This book was helpful. Everything from arrangements to vows.
      • Review:: 'More great information from The Knot! This books was very informative on traditions, and sample toasts. It also included suggested music lists and vowes. A great book!
