Discover Calorie Restriction--the Only Proven Way to Slow the Aging Process and Maintain Peak Vitality:
Book by Brian M. Delaney and Lisa Walford. Marlowe & Company 256 pages Paperback Published 2005-06-09. Description: At last, here's a book that synthesizes the increasingly popular CR (Calorie Restriction) diet for the layperson. CR is not a diet primarily about weight loss, although readers will lose weight. CR is about eating highly nutritious foods to extend your healthy years.

Here's the concept: eat fewer calories and choose foods more carefully. This will reallocate how your metabolism uses its resources to convert food into energy; in other words, what goes in will be used more efficiently. You will feel better and function better—and the big bonus: the CR diet slows aging. CR lengthens the periods of youth and middle age and substantially reduces the risk of virtually all the diseases of aging.

Brian Delaney and Lisa Walford, two longtime CR practitioners, will take you on a handheld stroll through the process, including an introduction to CR, how to do it, some of the key issues in the current dialogue, and the skinny on superfoods.
      • Review:: 'Only Health Book You'll ever need bought the book when it first became available almost a month ago (don't know why it says 'June 9' here--it was available earlier) and it has been extraordinarily helpful to me. I'm not one of these 'life extenders' who follow the diet to an extreme. I don't want to live to be 140 years old. I want to be healthy and trim. Other reviewers have talked about how the extremely clear explanations of some basic nutritional principles 'stick' in a powerful way that helps you make more sensible food choices. I have definitely found that to be the case. You 'feel' the harm a half pint of ice cream will do to your cells, and it's easy to say No. It's only been a month so we'll see how long the positive effects last... but right I can say I feel much better and I don't feel I'm making any kind of 'sacrifice', and I assume this will continue indefinitely. The personal stories were also very helpful. (I wish there had been more. That would be my only negative comment about the book.) I just saw one of the coauthors on Good Morning America a couple hours ago, who actually looked WAY too thin. It's too bad ABC didn't show the people following milder versions of the diet like Delaney the other coauthor since they actually look great. Maybe some people on this diet get obsessed with extreme health or extreme skinniness and that's what ABC wanted to focus on to make this sensationalistic. It's a pity because the extremists actually look almost scary. But for people who start out overweight (like moi), this diet is perfect. • Review:: 'Great combo of the science behind CR and "how to" The book persuasively states the arguments as to why caloric restriction is likely to extend human life spans in the same manner in which it extends the life spans of other species. In addition, there's some good stuff on the cellular changes that take place in the body's cells as one goes on a CR diet. One of the best aspects of the book is the flexibility possible with CR - you don't have to put yourself on a quasi-starvation diet to reap many of the rewards of CR. In 6 months, merely by eating a low cal lunch and avoiding desserts, I have dropped from 185 lbs to 164, and have seen my blood pressure drop back into a normal range. This book has been invaluable in changing my life - it gives one a science-derrived motivation for sticking to a diet that's really powerful. I had never been on a diet in my life, and yet I have found a moderate CR diet to be extremely easy to handle. I can't recommend this book highly enough.
      • Review:: 'Key to vitality, health, and strength This book is an excellent guide to living healthier, longer, and losing weight -- a little or a lot. What I most liked about the book is the flexibility of the program. There's nothing necessarily extreme about this diet at all. You can be adaptive with it. The book makes it easy I first heard about in the WSJ, where one of the authors (Delaney) is described as "stuffing his face" for breakfast. That got my attention. I bought the book, and, via changes in *what* I eat, I am actually spending less time thinking about how *much* I eat. I think the reviewer from May 6 is reviewing a different book. Roy Walford, the father of Delaney's coauthor, wrote a couple books about this diet (or a similar diet) where he stressed the extreme version of it. The Longevity Diet is different. It's *flexible*, that's what I like about it. And, by the way, I'm now *stronger* than I was before starting the diet, and my doctor says that changes in my cholesterol levels alone may give me an extra ten years of life. There are no guarantees, of coures. But I feel better, and am stronger, so I'll stick with this diet. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to be healthier and lose weight. It's well worth the pocket change it costs. You may not want to follow the diet, but you will have learned a *lot* about the connection between what you eat and fast your body ages. You can use that information to fine-tune lots of aspects of your life, even if you don't go on the diet "whole hog".
      • Review:: 'extremes Yes, the average American is overfat, and it will likely shorten his life, but to suffer every moment,(and the practitioners admit this), for the sake of a possible extra year or two of life is -gambling-, wagering years of discomfort. Imagine being hungry for thirty years, and dying at seventy. Ouch. A bad bet, and you won't know if you won or lost for a lifetime. *A few problems with the research*:1/The rats are restricted from birth, while most humans begin -well- into middle age, lessening the effect, both by percentage of lifespan, (start at 55, expect to live to 90, it's a little late), and due to whatever health problems have already begun,(many are likely well in place). 2/Caged rats given unlimited food will morbidly -overeat-, so the comparisons have no baseline. 3/ Rats aren't people,(many previously failed experiments have shown this to be an important point). .... There isn't one single example in humanity yet to prove this theory. Why not concentrate on being as strong, fit, healthy and happy as possible right now? Meet some restrictors before you decide; they're weak as infants and perpetually hungry...is this the key to survival? If so, define survival. ( I've just found out that one of the major advocates is 57 years old. I'm glad his BP is normalized, and that he feels great at 6'/120 lbs, but he looks 70. I know people in their mid-80's who appear to be in better health.) I'd hate to die because I was too weak to win a fight, or too slow to dodge a car. (Don't get me wrong: I'm an advocate of whole, fresh, organic, raw fruit and vegetable mono-meals, *eaten until you are satisfied*. This way of eating will also, (eventually), make the practitioner very thin, and must be combined with much activity to create the necessary appetite and nutrient absorption. If anything, this diet requires making a point of eating -enough-.) The optimum diet is self-regulating; having to stop eating while still hungry is a sign that you are not on the proper diet. (A sad fact: Many restrictors use the always-toxic no-cal sweeteners. Big Mistake. Even the rats didn't do that.)
      • Review:: 'Great book to motivate you to eat less ***** I really liked everything about this book: the personal stories, the simple explanations, the research-based (not hype-based) nutritional advice. Basically, the Longevity Diet can be summed up as eating less overall, and coping with hunger by eating better quality food so that you don't experience malnutrition and food cravings. The value of buying the book is that when you're done reading it, you feel more MOTIVATED to do this. I am very familiar with current nutritional research, and appreciate having a concise summary of timely information like this book. Another great thing about it is that it's very, very flexible, encouraging you to listen to your body and to find a way of eating that is right for you. It gives, in the personal examples, illustrations of how people apply the diet so that you can see how to customize healthy eating to fit your lifestyle. Although you will lose weight, the orientation of the book is primarily on being healthy and living a long, high-quality life. At one point in The Longevity Diet, it makes the point that many people will choose to continue eating to excess because it is what they enjoy, and it is the quality of life they choose to make their life meaningful; they also state that this is a valid choice, and do not make people who take this path "wrong". This book, however, is for those of us who have tried eating to excess, have tried being obese, have experienced food cravings, and want something different and doable. I would give this book my highest recommendation, and think that everyone should understand the information in it, then make a choice that works for them! *****

Reverse Aging

Book by Sang Y. Whang. Jsp Publishing 123 pages Paperback Published 1991-03. Description: Not science fiction, but a scientific fact! This book is the first common sense scientific explanation of the aging process and "how to" reverse it. The nutrients that we deliver to our cells burn with oxygen and become acidic wastes after giving energy to our body. The body tries its best to get rid of these acidic wastes through urine and perspiration. Unfortunately, our lifestyle, diet and environment prevent our body to get rid of all the wastes that it generates. Gradually, these leftover acidic wastes accumulate somewhere within our body. Since acid coagulates blood, the blood circulation near the waste areas becomes poor, causing all kinds of degenerative diseases to develop. The author defines the aging process as the accumulation of non-disposed acidic wastes within the body. According to this theory, the reduction of accumulated wastes is re verse aging. This book explains how some of the adult degenerative diseases are caused by too much acidic wastes, and describes the various scientific devices and methods to reduce these wastes without any harmful side effects. These devices and methods are being wid ely used in Japan. Alkaline water makers (water ionizers) have been in existence in Japan for more than 40 years. Many in the alternative health industry of water ionizers, magnet and far-infrared devices regard this book as the most comprehensive and up-to-date reference book of its kind in the English language. It is a "must read" for all who are health-conscious.
      • Review:: 'Well written, endearing book Let me start off as saying this book contains a lot of common sense philosophies of weight loss and overall good health. Drink lots of water, eat real foods, as opposed to processed junk foods. Always go for fresh vegetables instead of canned, etc. I agree with that wholeheartedly. The book's idea is very pure and simple, and it brings up some very valid points of other causes for weight gain or other common maladities that might besides overeating or lack of exercise, such as thyroid problems, hormonal imbalances, lack of sleep, undiagnosed allergies, etc. So for those reasons, I would recommend the book. Even if you don't take all of the advice to heart, I think its an educational book and I am altering some of my habits based on the advice in the book. Some negatives of the book are, I found he could be a little redundant in his writing (I skimmed over parts that were getting repetitive) and the more I read, the more it became apparent that to follow his program to the letter would require a big committment - the books says everything from teflon in cookware to pesticides in foods can cause toxic reactions that can cause weight gain. While I don't disagree with that, it got to be a little depressing reading that so many things in our enviroment could be poisoning us and causing various health problems, including weight gain. That said, just because it can be a little depressing, does not mean it shouldn't be something of which we are blissfuly ignorant. But I find that this would be a program that requires a big commitment and it would require some sacrifice. I think if you are overweight, the one thing that you should check out in this book are some tests Dr. Hyman recommends you request your doctor to perform to make sure there are not some hidden health problems which could be causing weight gain. • Review:: 'Tough language but few verifiable facts In a world desperate for health solutions, the uneducated masses flock to purported cures and aids that have not met the tests of either scientific or medical validity. Alkaline water is one of those potholes that the unsuspecting customer encounters. Careful research of this book and related topics finds that the real reason alkaline water is popular is that in pregnant Oriental women, it is believed that the use of alkaline water increases the probablility of a boy rather than a girl being born. Hence the seven(7) percent utilization of this water in that part of the world. Elsewhere, mycocardia problems with controlled animal tests using alkaline water have been known since 1996 but are suspiciously avoided by the Japanese organizations which promote alkaline water. Common sense nutrition tells us that if one is concerned about acidic food intake, then the use of alkaline foods with alkaline fibre and neutral pH liquid is the answer. Alkaline promoters would have you dilute your sensitive blood pH with high alkalinity thus inducing hematological problems which may put you in the emergency room as my medic(1985 Nobel Prize recipient) clearly points out. You might as well drink battery acid he said, the result will be the same stress on your blood pH. Here is a medic who is not an expert in water but in internal medicine cautioning against forced dilution of blood pH. He continued by saying that when that much alkalinity is added to the digestive system, the very low pH which naturally occurs in the disgestive tract is neutralized and food is not metabolized properly. The various amino acids which are essential in the metabolic process are no longer effective and food putrifies and nutrition suffers. The alkaline promoters, including this book's author have been sniffing glue in a closed closet and are simply out of touch with even the very basics of body chemistry and metabolic processes. Read the book for entertainment and not for education and utility in your daily nutritional program.
      • Review:: 'Great review of the science behind alkaline diets This was one of the first books I picked up after reading Dr. Young's "The pH Miracle", which had left me with more questions than answers. What I loved about this book was the way Mr. Whang explains - in plain English anyone can understand - the chemical and physical science that makes alkaline diets work. If you're looking to understand the science behind alkaline diets, this book is a must-read. Mr. Whang doesn't approach alkaline balance like most other authors who just tell you to eat this and not eat that. In the first few chapters of the book, he gives the reader the essential understanding of how the human body works - from a chemical perspective. He doesn't make assumptions or rely on annectodal data - he shows the reader how the laws of physics and chemistry affect the chemical reactions inside the human body. Armed with this information, he then tells the reader how the basic elements of foods (minerals, calcium, phosphorus, etc.) affect the pH of the body. This is the key understanding when it comes to figuring out which foods are acidifying and which ones are alkalizing. His approach is very straight forward, clear, and matter-of-fact. He then goes on to show how an acidic lifestyle and diet affects the body, how the body tries to maintain its chemical integrity, and what the resulting strain does, in terms of reactions, diseases, etc. Mr. Whang's description of diseases and how they come to be is also very interesting. He goes through a long list of diseases, gives specific reasons for each of them (from an alkaline diet point of view) and tells the reader how to reverse them. He goes a step further in his description of non-medicinal health improvement devices that are mainly used in other countries. Again, giving scientific reasons why and how they work to alkalize the body. What is missing from this book is a good description of what to do on a day-to-day basis to become alkaline. He only mentions drinking alkaline waters. As a matter of fact, the only book I've found that has practical approach and step-by-step instructions for becomong alkaline (including what to do tomorrow) is Create?.com">this acid alkaline diet book. Nonetheless, I think Mr. Whang's book is excellent. If you're serious about getting healthy through an alkaline diet, you must to read this book (and also find another book that gives step-by-step instructions for what to do).
      • Review:: 'A very valuable book Forward-thinking health theorists stress the need for our bodies to be less acidic. Civilization and laziness have led most of us to detrimental eating habits, one result being acidic bodies. If you want to test your acidity all you need is ph testing paper from the health food store. Test your urine. Then try to get more alkaline. It isn't easy.

Dr Whang safely assumes that most of us will not easily change our behavior. His recommendation is to use ionized water which is indeed very effective at impacting acid conditions. He has several other interesting theories as well.

I have been using ionized water for two months and see many internal improvements that reach beyond an increasingly better acid balance. Some of the true believers in ionized water consider the alkalinity to be only one potential benefit of the water. Do some web searching for further information.

If you read all of the reviews of this book you will find some that are cautionary. The reasoning and backup for these opinions is somewhat thin, but this is true of information in general on ionized water. I have read much of what I can on this matter and suggest that you do the same. For myself I believe the material in the book to be very valuable. For the immediate future I will use ionized water as a health supplement. Based on what I have seen and read I hope that it will be an ongoing aid in the effort to find balanced health...

A recommendation for an inexpensive batch ionizer to get started (no affiliation whatsoever)...hiddencures.com

      • Review:: 'Recipe for stomach pain! I read this book and was thoroughly convinced that the author was onto something big. I purchased his special product that alters the PH of water to help alkalize your system. I began to experience strange stomach pains. It took me many months to ferret out that it was his product that was causing it! I tried another bottle: same problem. It didn't matter when I took it or whether I took it with or without food and/or other supplements.
